Palm Precorder brings video recording homebrew to the Pre

If you like your software homebrewed with just a hint of alpha then boy do we have an app for you. The WebOS homebrew community just released Precorder; an app that lets your Palm Pre record audio and 30fps 480×320 pixel video in H.264/AVC format — you can even control the built-in LED for recording in low-light situations. Unfortunately, there’s no video preview presented while recording but hey, it’s alpha software bro… and it’s free. Palm and Sprint issue statement acknowledging Profile backup issue

Even in a world full of racket, it seems that the squeaky wheel still gets the grease. In yet another blow to this whole “cloud” agenda, a vocal segment of Palm users began to notice that information transferred from their online Palm Profile was only a fraction of what it should have been. Today, both Palm and Sprint have issued a joint statement acknowledging the issue and promising to work much, much harder in order to avoid having something like this ruin your life once again. To quote:

“We are seeing a small number of customers who have experienced issues transferring their Palm Profile information to another Palm webOS device. Palm and Sprint are working closely together to support these customers to successfully transfer their information to the new device.”

Between this mess and the T-Mobile fiasco, we’re pretty certain we’re being forced to stay on the manual backup bandwagon for the foreseeable future.

True smartphones like the Palm Pre, Motorola Droid, and iPhone are all chewing up a majority of wireless mindshare these days, which makes it particularly easy to forget that there’s this huge, vibrant catalog of cool non-smartphone handsets sitting right below them in your favorite carrier’s lineup. They can play music, games, sometimes last for days on a charge (try that with a G1 — we dare you), and often take up just a fraction of the space in your pocket that a more powerful handset would. They’re not for everyone, but odds are you know a couple folks who fit the featurephone mold, and… well, it is the season of giving, isn’t it? Follow the break for a few of our recommendations.

OnLive demonstrates iPhone app, set to redefine mobile gaming?

Okay, we admit to still being a little bit unsure about OnLive’s pledges for high-end, high-resolution, lag-free gaming on any ‘ol device with bandwidth, but we want to believe, and so it’s with skeptical optimism that we report on news of mobile implementations. The company has demonstrated an iPhone app in which users are able to play against gamers on a PC or on the company’s MicroConsole — despite not having a single button to press. It’s interesting stuff but, according to OnLive’s CEO Steve Perlman, it’ll be awhile before we see this in the wild, as plans for initial mobile apps will be limited to checking game stats and watching live gameplay. However, we presume it’ll be a small step from there to flip the switch and two-way communications, meaning that perhaps by the time Modern Warfare 3 hits the wires you can keep gaming even while you’re commuting.

Remember that FCC filing for a GSM-loving North American Palm Pre? Looks like the mystery’s been solved, Encyclopedia Brown, and our culprit is just south of the border. As previously rumored, Mexico’s Telcel will get the Pre, SIM card slot and all. Launch date is November 27th, just in time for the US to be thankful for an online community ready to unlock and import this stateside.

Brush back that mullet and adjust your ill-fitting halter tops folks ’cause Palm’s newest webOS device has been spotted at Walmart. This pair of Pixi lovelies was ogled overnight inside one of Sam Walton’s finest Tennessee locations reportedly sporting a $400 price tag and little else — it wasn’t in Walmart’s system so it wasn’t yet available for purchase. Something that should be rectified in time for Sunday’s official launch with Sprint ($100 on contract) if not sooner.

We’ve already seen a quick Palm Pixi unboxing and hands-on video, but we’re guessing most folks are looking for a bit more than that in the lead-up to launch day. Thankfully, YouTube user stayfly2407 has come through with a video that, for the first time, clearly shows the Pixi running webOS 1.3.1, which may or may not be the version the phone actually ships with — it was only just recently seeded to developers. The video unfortunately doesn’t show any new features associated with this version, however, but it does seem to be speedy enough even in spite of the Pixi’s slower processor. We heard it’d be here in mid-Q4, and sure enough, it’s here. And by “it,” we mean “BlackBerry support for Celio’s largely unwanted REDFLY Mobile Companion.” Starting today, those looking for the Foleo’s long lost cousin can snap up a REDFLY and download a free driver that adds compatibility for RIM’s BlackBerry Bold 9000, Curve 8900 and Tour 9630. Granted, it’s not like the BlackBerry web browser will be any less painful to use on an enlarged screen, but hey, whatever suits your fancy.

Palm: webOS speed fix in the ‘immediate future’

Filed under: Software, Palm, webOSPalm device owners have little to complain about when it comes to webOS; not after enduring Garnet and empty Access promises for so long. Still, that OS which relies so heavily upon web technologies like HTML 5, JavaScript, and CSS can be surprisingly sluggish when compared to other smartphone OSes. Now we have a hint as to why thanks to Palm’s Ben Galbraith and Dion Almae who made an interesting admission Tuesday related to the Pre’s UI latency compared to the iPhone 3GS — a phone based on the same ARM architecture. According to the duo, “the path to the GPU didn’t exist” in webOS, something that will be solved in the “immediate future” using CSS transforms to modify visual elements thus freeing-up CPU cycles for other tasks. Hmm, immediate future sure sounds like a webOS update to accompany the Palm Pixi release on November 15th.
